Rajeev Suri Lawsuit

See, before the renovation and redesign were going on for the Parliament House in India (which was called the Central Vista project), there were a lot of people speaking against it. And from that time, you may remember Rajeev Suri’s name, right? Like, he was the one who filed the Rajeev Suri Lawsuit back in 2020. Just in case you don’t know this, all of this was actually to rethink and reconsider some part of the Central Vista project. But, as we all know, the project went on and finally in 2023, we saw the inauguration of the New Parliament House, which was a big thing and a talking point in the country at that time.

So, Who is Rajeev Suri, and Why Did He File a Case?

Well, first of all, Rajeev Suri is just a regular man who lives in Delhi and one who really and deeply cares about the environment around us. He is one of those citizens who are really aware of what is going on in the country, especially with Delhi’s development in recent times.

And when he got to know about the Central Vista Project and when he checked out the details of this case, he saw that the project was pushed forward way too quickly. Like, he was concerned whether all the rules were being followed or not, especially those that are in place to make sure that the environmental damage is kept minimal because of construction or developmental projects.

As per his claims, the government was actually changing the rules regarding how the land in the area was to be used without letting the citizens in the area know and without giving them a proper chance to speak up about it all. That’s precisely why he filed this lawsuit, and we know it as the famous Rajeev Suri Lawsuit. Much like in the Publix Deceptive Pricing Lawsuit, where consumers challenged corporate practices they believed were quietly unfair, Rajeev Suri’s case revolved around a citizen standing up against decisions made without sufficient public transparency.

So, What Happened in The Courtrooms?

First of all, the Supreme Court actually looked into this case really seriously and considered all the allegations or claims of Rajeev Suri. And sure enough, there was a group of 3 judges who heard both sides of the arguments, and after that, this case was officially known as Transferred Case (Civil) No. 229 of 2020. Though we saw that this case actually ended with a decision on January 5, 2021.

A decision was made? What was that? We’ll talk about that later. Well, in the arguments, Rajeev Suri and whoever was on his side said that changing the use of the land wasn’t done properly during the Central Vista project, and that’s why this case becomes super important. They also alleged that the government was just looking over all the environmental issues approvals that are usually needed for such a large-scale project.

What Did the Court Finally Say?

As we all know, the decision regarding this case actually came back in 2021. What was that? Well, in the courtroom hearings, the judges actually agreed that the government was doing nothing wrong and they were following all the rules so that the project could continue. But only one judge had problems with how the government wasn’t listening to the people who were raising their voices against this project. That’s all!
